Successful Participation in the FHIR Hackathon

At this year’s FHIR Hackathon organized by HL7 Austria, the BIN research group actively contributed to one of the key tracks focusing on the Electronic Parent-Child Health Record. Our colleagues Lukas and Anna participated in the event and represented our institution in the most attended of the five tracks. Out of 58 participants in total, approximately one third joined the track dedicated to the digitalization of the Parent-Child Health Record, highlighting the strong interest in this topic within the Austrian eHealth community.

Our research group was commissioned to develop a client application to showcase how hospitals can complete the FHIR-based questionnaires required as part of the digital transformation of the Parent-Child Health Record. The goal is to provide a practical, user-friendly, and technically robust solution based on FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources).
The client application presented at the hackathon offers:

  • A clear and low-threshold introduction to FHIR Questionnaires
  • Interactive exploration of questionnaire structures
  • Transparent visualization of underlying data models
  • A hands-on demonstration of technical implementation

The application not only served as a live demo but also sparked in-depth discussions.

Milestone Achievement: First-Time Availability of an ELGA Test Environment
A particular highlight of the track was the first-time availability of an ELGA test environment in this context. The client developed by our team was already connected to this environment, enabling realistic interactions. For the first time, participants also had the opportunity to connect themselves to the ELGA test environment, supported by on-site technical and conceptual guidance. This hands-on experience provided significant added value and was widely recognized by participants as one of the most impactful aspects of the event.

Conclusion
The hackathon once again demonstrated how practical collaboration, technical expertise, and open exchange foster innovation in digital health projects. We are proud to contribute to the digital transformation of the Parent-Child Health Record with our client application and to actively support the advancement of interoperable healthcare solutions in Austria.
